Workshop Details

This 3-hour in-person continuing education program provides clinicians with a practical, skills-based introduction to applying Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) in the treatment of primary Substance Use Disorders (SUD). Participants will learn how ACT’s psychological flexibility model addresses core components of addiction—such as craving, emotional avoidance, shame, ambivalence, and relapse patterns—and how to incorporate ACT interventions into individual and group treatment across levels of care.

Through experiential practice, clinical demonstrations, and case application, this training equips clinicians with actionable ACT strategies that can be immediately integrated into PHP, IOP, OP, and residential SUD programming.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this program, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain how the ACT psychological flexibility model informs assessment and treatment planning for individuals with Substance Use Disorders.

  2. Identify the six core processes of ACT and describe the relevance of each to recovery, relapse prevention, and motivation enhancement.

  3. Apply acceptance, defusion, and present-moment interventions to help clients manage cravings, emotional distress, and avoidance behaviours.

  4. Integrate values clarification and committed-action strategies into treatment plans that support behaviour change and long-term recovery.

  5. Demonstrate at least three ACT-based interventions appropriate for individual or group sessions within addiction treatment settings.
